Supporting Tactical Coordination for Mature Gamers

Arma Reforger to Arma 4: Real Teamwork in a Clunky Sandbox”

At PracticallyRealGaming.com, teamwork isn’t dependent on a flawless engine—it’s driven by the people in the squads. Our community lineage from the TacticalGamer.com era was forged in the flexible, deeply customizable sandboxes of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, Arma 2 and Arma 3. We know exactly what makes a great tactical environment: powerful user-created content, flexible mission selection, and tools that allow creators to build dynamic, responsive worlds.

Right now, the tactical gaming landscape is in a fascinating, albeit frustrating, transition period.

The Reality of the Enfusion Engine

Currently, PRG hosts a dedicated server for Arma Reforger. However, we aren’t blind to the platform’s current hurdles, and we refuse to gloss over them. For veterans of the traditional Arma framework—especially our legacy mission makers—the Enfusion Engine has introduced significant friction.

The shift to a rigid server-side replication model has severely limited client-level scripting. Furthermore, the current state of AI presents real challenges for dynamic scenario design, often swinging between hyper-restrictive guarding or chasing distant gunfire across the map. From a server management perspective, the clunky nature of mod-dependent scenarios means we can no longer simply swap missions on the fly based on who is online at the time. Every scenario is an interconnected web of dependencies.

Playing the Game, Not the Engine

So, why do we bother hosting a server? Because of our core philosophy: We play the game, not the engine. When the infrastructure gets clunky, real leadership and player communication become even more vital. We don’t rely on flawless game mechanics to force teamwork; our community brings the teamwork to the game. By stripping away toxic power trips, rigid military hierarchies, and ego, we lean into the pure fun of organizing the chaos together.

You can see exactly how we bypass these technical limitations to prioritize objective-driven fun in some community gameplay videos:

Looking Ahead to Arma 4

As Bohemia Interactive marches toward the horizon with Arma 4, we maintain a healthy, veteran skepticism balanced with readiness. We deeply hope the developer takes the hard lessons of Reforger’s restrictive editor environment to heart and ultimately delivers a platform that empowers the user-content freedom we enjoyed in previous eras.

Whether Arma 4 delivers that robust creative freedom or requires us to innovate around its limitations, PRG will be ready. We will continue providing an ego-free, welcoming environment for players who want to focus on real-world strategy, authentic camaraderie, and the simple joy of following our leaders to fun.
